Afghan convert freed from prison

Abdul Rahman is interviewed during a hearing in Kabul

Abdul Rahman converted to Christianity 16 years ago

An Afghan man who could have faced the death penalty for converting to Christianity has been freed from jail. Abdul Rahman was charged with rejecting Islam but his case was dismissed after he was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial, officials said.

Efforts are under way to find a country that will give him asylum.

There was international outcry over the case, which has highlighted ambiguities in Afghanistan’s constitution over the interpretation of religious issues.

QUICK GUIDE

Mr Rahman was released from Kabul’s main high security Pul-e-Charki prison late on Monday.

It is not clear where he has been moved to while awaits the results of his asylum plea.

“I can confirm that he was released,” said Justice Minister Sarwar Danish. “He is not in detention. I do not know if he is with his family or where, but he has been acquitted.”

Italy offer

UN spokesman Adrian Edwards said the organisation was working with the Afghan government to solve the asylum issue.

He expected asylum would be granted by a country “interested in a peaceful solution”.

Since he’s sick, they’ve released him… It’s the right thing
Relative of Abdul Rahman

The Italian foreign ministry said it would seek cabinet approval to offer him asylum.

Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission denied Mr Rahman had been declared sick to get out of a controversial situation.

“We have to respect public opinion, but… from the very first day, our opinion at the commission was that he was not looking well enough to be on trial,” its chairwoman, Sima Samar, told the BBC.

Mr Rahman was arrested about two weeks ago. Under Afghanistan’s Sharia legal system he could have faced execution if he had refused to renounce Christianity.

The BBC’s Sanjoy Majumder in Kabul says the Afghan constitution enshrines personal freedom and recognises the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

But it also says the country’s laws are based on Islamic Sharia law and there is an explicit article which says no one has the right to contravene Islam.

It is deliberately ambiguous because it attempted to address Western concerns over democracy as well as placate domestic hardliners who favour an Islamic state, our correspondent says.

‘Disturbed’

The case sparked Western criticism, with the US, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy and Sweden among those demanding Afghanistan respect international laws on freedom of religion and human rights.

Many Afghans are not happy with the decision to dismiss the case

Pope Benedict XVI also asked for Mr Rahman to be freed.

Mr Rahman’s family had asked the Supreme Court to dismiss the case against him, saying he suffered from mental illness.

Judge Ansarullah Mawlavizada told the BBC there was considerable doubt that Mr Rahman was fit to stand trial.

According to Judge Mawlavizada, Mr Rahman appeared “disturbed”.

The judge also said it was not clear if the accused was really an Afghan or a citizen of another country.

Several hundred people protested on Monday against the case’s dismissal.

Mr Rahman has lived outside Afghanistan for 16 years and is believed to have converted to Christianity during a stay in Germany.

Khosrow
(Iran)
Even as a small child, Khosrow questioned the “meaning of life.” Everything around him raised questions. Why do flowers have color? What’s beyond the stars? Where do we go when we die? Who are “those people” inside the TV set? Where do they go when the TV is shut off? When no one could answer his many questions satisfactorily, his sensitive nature gave way to a growing depression. One day as a young man, he passed by an Assyrian Christian church and decided to go inside, thinking he might find answers to some of his “questions.” There were only a few elderly women there and an elderly pastor who gave him a box of books. The books were all in Farsi and among them was a copy of the New Testament, which Khosrow read from cover to cover. But the experience of reading alone was not enough to satisfy his search for answers. He threw the book across his room in despair. Just then, the form of a man came to him in a vision. This man extended his hands toward Khosrow and told him: “Take my hands and everything will change forever.” Khosrow took the man’s hands and a wave of what he describes as “electricity” flowed through his body. Kneeling, he began to weep, making such a noise that his parents rushed to the room. They were flabbergasted to see their son crying for the first time in many, many years.

Khosrow’s vision was not a figment of his imagination. He returned to the Assyrian pastor who had given him the books and described his experience. Over the following years, Khosrow grew as a disciple of the Lord, eventually becoming a pastor himself. But the persecution of Christians in Iran forced him to flee to Turkey with his wife and two children. There were persecutions and difficulties in Turkey as well, but Khosrow and his family won people over through patience and love. Khosrow planted more churches in Turkey before he and his family were forced to flee again. This time they sought refuge in Austria. They flew from Turkey to Bosnia and made their way from there on foot through treacherous mountain passes at night. While crossing a river, Khosrow’s son, Joseph, lost his footing on a makeshift bridge and fell into the freezing water, dragging his father in as well. The river was fast flowing and deep, and Khosrow flailed about in the dark water, searching in vain for his son. Meanwhile, his wife had also jumped into the river to help, but was in danger of drowning. Suddenly, Khosrow felt as if someone put Joseph into his arms. He also felt as if someone—invisible to his eyes—was helping him stand in the deep water, then helping him carry Joseph to the river’s embankment. All were saved and the family, persevering through yet more ordeals, made their way to Austria and safety.

Khosrow compares the invisible hands that saved him and his family that night to the hands he saw and felt in his vision of Jesus. He tells the story of being asked once by a skeptic how he could know the vision wasn’t a product of his own imagination. Khosrow asked the skeptic if he was wearing clothes. The man was taken aback by the question, but the analogy was clear. Khosrow’s vision was as real as that and more.

Dini(Indonesia)

As the oldest child in her family, twelve-year-old Dini had always been close to her father; so when he died suddenly, she was devastated. Her devastation turned to anger when she learned that her father had an affair with her aunt who was now pregnant. She also learned that her mother was pregnant from her father.

As a struggling widow, Dini’s mother decided to place her three youngest children in an orphanage. She also had to sell valuables in the house just so the family would have money to buy food. About four years later, a relative told Dini that her mother was getting remarried. Dini was very hurt by this and didn’t understand why her mother hadn’t told her. She felt like she didn’t have anyone she could depend on since her father had disappointed her, and now her mother had done the same.

Dini became friends with the troublemakers at school and went through a rebellious period. She skipped classes, didn’t wear the school uniform and got into fights. When several of her friends faced serious problems, Dini began to ask questions: “What is it that I’m looking for? Religious rules don’t make me happy. But a free life without the rules of religion isn’t something I want either.”

The month of Ramadan arrived and Dini became diligent with the religious practices of fasting and prayer. One night, during Ramadan, she decided to pray the tahajud prayer. The tahajud prayer is not one of the five required daily prayers. It is only done at midnight and, in particular, it includes petitions that ask God for signs. Dini set her alarm clock and woke up to pray. She says, “I had such strong faith that whatever I asked God for that night, God would listen and give His answer.” At the end of the prayer which she had memorized, she cried out to God and said, “God, I am confused. I’m very confused about the way to meet Your approval.” She continued, “God, if you wish for me to live life within your demands, then tonight show me the right path. If you do not show me, God, then let me live life the way I want. I won’t ever again care about the rules of religion. And if I die, don’t send me to hell. I didn’t know what was right! It wouldn’t be fair for me to go to hell, God. You never showed me the right way. What I want, God, is to be shown the right path tonight. I will live my life the way you appoint it.”

A bright light then appeared and she saw a figure standing in front of her. The man was wearing a white robe but she couldn’t see his face clearly. She doesn’t know how but she realized that the figure was Isa. He said, “Follow me,” and she was confused and thought, “Lord, I am a Muslim. How can I follow you?” She asked several other questions as she wondered how she could follow the God of the Christians. She heard another voice saying, “You can’t possibly follow Him. Forget your prayer! Forget the intention of leading a good life!” When she looked at the man in white, she felt calm and peaceful. Jesus continued to say, “Follow me,” as He stretched out His hand. Dini struggled over her decision but finally she said, “God, if this is the way of truth, okay. I want to follow you.” The moment she said that, she felt as if ice was pouring over her chest. At the same time, she felt a peace she had never experienced before. She says, “I felt something extraordinary inside my heart.”

After Dini became a Christian, she experienced persecution from her family. She was just 17 years old when they forced her to leave home. She attended boarding school and supported herself through part-time jobs. She also pursued reconciliation with her family. While showing respect for the Javanese traditions, she didn’t back down on her unwavering commitment to Christ. The greatest test for her was forgiving her deceased father and accepting her half-brother, born out of wedlock to her aunt. When his mother could no longer take care of him, Dini embraced her half-brother as her own.

She continues to live as an example of one who can “do all things through Christ who strengthens” her.

British imam’s daughter under police protection after converting to Christianity Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent of The Times

A British imam’s daughter is living in fear of her life under police protection after she received death threats from her family for converting to Christianity.

The young woman, aged 32, whose father is a Muslim imam in the north of England, has moved house 45 times to escape detection by her family since she became a Christian 15 years ago.

Hannah, who uses a pseudonym to hide her identity, told The Times how she became a Christian after she ran away from home at 16 to escape an arranged marriage.

The threats against her became more serious a month ago, prompting police to offer her protection in case of an attempt on her life.

She was speaking on the eve of the launch of a new charity in London today to promote greater religious awareness. Muslims in Britain who wish to convert to Christianity are living in fear of their lives because of Islamic apostasy laws, a senior Church of England bishop will warn at the invitaton-only launch in west London.

The Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, will claim “freedom to believe” is under threat in Britain because of Islamic hostility to conversion.

Hannah, now employed in multi-faith youth work and who gives talks to churches on Islam, is the daughter of a Lancashire imam whose seven other children are demanding she return to Islam. She has been in hiding,

since her home was attacked by a group of men armed with knives, axes and hammers, in 1994. She will describe today how she is in fear of her life after the death threats against her were recently renewed.

She said: “I left home and I had nowhere to go. My religious education teacher gave me somewhere to live. Even though she tried to make me stay at home on Sundays, I am quite rebellious by nature and I started to go to church with her out of curiosity.”

She said she had been in hiding, on and off, ever since, and has now been given a telephone number she can call for an instant response by police should she need help. The latest threat was a text message from one of her brothers, warning he could not be responsible for his actions if she did not return to Islam.

Hannah said she was looking forward to getting married so she could change her name and escape detection by her family. Not all Muslims in Britain are this extreme, she believes.

“It is representative of some Muslims. I know the Koran says that anyone who goes away from Islam should be killed as an apostate so in some ways my family are following the Koran. They are following Islam to the word. But I do not think every Muslim would actually act on that.”

Earlier this year, a Policy Exchange study found that 36 per cent of British Muslims aged between 16 and 24 believed those who converted to another religion should be punished by death.

Dr Nazir-Ali will speak out on behalf of Hannah and others suffering persecution for their beliefs in the UK at today’s launch of Lapido Media, a new charity which is seeking to promote “religious literacy” in world affairs.

The Bishop is expected to describe how sharia law in many countries, including parts of Britain, punishes apostasy with death and is viewed as treason by theocratic governments. Dr Nazir-Ali will call on society to offer greater protection, by increasing understanding of what makes people vulnerable.

Pakistan-born Dr Nazir-Ali, who has a Christian and Muslim background, is patron of Lapido Media, funded by donations and trusts including the Jerusalem Trust. The word ‘lapido’ means ‘to speak up for’ in the Acholi language of Northern Uganda. The charity has been named in honour of the courage of Acholi church leaders who campaigned for an end to a little-reported 20-year war there, involving the abduction of 25,000 children.

Meet the DoctorThe life of Dr. Jeremiah Cummings is so much like the life of the Apostle Paul in that he too opposed Christianity as a Minister and Student under Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam for nine and a half years. But in 1997, Minister Jeremiah Fard Muhammad came to know Christ as his savior in a mighty way. After thirteen months of intense study and forty-three days of fasting and prayer, God filled Jeremiah Fard Muhammad with the Holy Ghost. God called Jeremiah Cummings to be an Evangelist to the world and a teacher that will reach out to the 1.2 billion Muslims whom the Bible calls the Seed of Ishmael. He has appeared on TBN, Daystar, the World Television Networks and the 700 Club. Prior to Islam in the 1970’s Jeremiah Cummings was the first tenor for the world renouned group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and recorded on three gold and two platinum albums including “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “Wakeup Everybody”. Now an embassador for Christ, Jeremiah is the President / Founder of Worldwide International Campaign for Christ through which over 280,000 former Muslims have now converted to Christianity and 300,000 non-believers are also now in the kingdom of God through his preaching. He is currently reaching people of Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Syria and West Africa with the Arabic Bible in an attempt to spread Christ into the Middle East. He is also the Founder and Pastor of the Amazing Life World Outreach in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dear Muslim friend,
Allow me to introduce myself to you. My name is Joseph Abraham — previously Mahmoud kamalEldeen Mujahed. Having come to the truth after many years of searching, I believe God is leading me to share with others what He has done for me through His holy Word — the Bible. Please be patient in reading my letter.

I am Egyptian by birth, born in a Muslim home. My father was a Muslim priest (sheikh) and a teacher of Islam in Cairo, Egypt until his death. My family took pride in their Islamic heritage, for almost all my ancestors were Muslim clergy. In the early years of my life I was looked upon as a future Muslim priest. Therefore my family sent me to a Quranic school from the age of six or seven.
When I was still very young, I started asking questions about God, His judgment, His truth, man’s eternal destiny, etc. Since I was only a child, my questions brought mockery from others. Such treatment did not help, but only discouraged me. I lived in despair and hopelessness because my soul was seeking something Islam did not provide.

My Islamic background was rather shallow and superficial. My father, as a sheikh, memorized almost all the Quran, and encouraged me to do the same, whether I understood it or not. Thus I became a mechanically religious young boy, while my heart was dry, like a desert that seemed endless and hopeless.

Like most Muslims, I lived in a traditional Muslim neighborhood, where I heard the thundering voice of the calls to worship Allah, five times a day. We celebrated the Islamic holidays religiously.

I was taught that Islam was the final religion, which cancelled Judaism and Christianity, and that Christians worship three gods. I was taught also that Christians had corrupted the “original” Bible, which — supposedly — once contained references to the prophet of Islam. Islam also denies the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But there was never any serious attempt to explain the ground of such claims.

When I reached my teens the desire to know which religion is true grew in me. Because questioning Islam is not tolerated in a Muslim nation, my questions and investigations became rather on a private basis. But later many found out about my curiosity. They threw harsh accusations at me: I was called “mentally unstable” and “idiot”. Still others claimed that I was under the influence of an anti-Islam organization. Muslims made my life so intolerable that I wished to die. All I wanted to know is the truth.

In my early twenties I started searching again. Among the questions that concerned me were: Where will I go after I die? Don’t I have the right to know my eternal destiny? Why do Muslims so strongly reject discussing their own religion? Does God want people to be blind to their destiny? How can I know that Islam is the only true religion?

Having no help from anyone, I began to read books about philosophy and psychology, some of which promoted atheism. But denying God never silenced the inward seeking to know the truth. I was encouraged to hold to fatalism and apathy, but that made things worse. My soul still desperately sought the ultimate reality of our spiritual destiny and God’s eternal truth.

It bothered me to realize that I was considered a Muslim just because I was born to Muslim parents and lived in a Muslim nation. No choice was given me: no chance was offered me to examine and find the truth. Worst of all, many Muslims I knew (including my own family) were Muslims simply by heritage. I hardly saw any Muslim making a serious and diligent attempt to investigate their religion with hearts opened to the truth.

In 1968, while I was reading a certain book, I ran into some verses from the Bible which greatly attracted me. These verses spoke with authority about a Man whose name was Jesus Christ. This Man said to the world, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” John 14:6

Dozens of questions jammed my head: Then what about the prophet of Islam? Why do Muslims never speak of Jesus Christ in this manner? They always speak of the prophet of Islam. Who is the “Father”? How can God be called “Father”? Who is His wife? What about Islam, which claims to be the ultimate truth? After all how can I trust the Bible, which Muslims claim is “corrupted”? And many more.

While reading more of the same book I came to other statements by this same Man, Jesus Christ, who said, “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 I had sought rest for many years, and this Jesus claimed to be the source of rest, and invited others to come to Him.

At that time I had never had a Bible; I had never seen one. Then secretly I asked a professing Christian to lend me a Bible so I could read more about this Man who claims such authority.

About the same time I had heard about an American evangelist who was visiting Egypt. With great eagerness I sneaked secretly into a Protestant church to hear his messages from the Bible. Because he knew no Arabic, he spoke through an interpreter. I heard things I had never heard before. I had never realized that the Bible is the source of God’s eternal truth.

In the past I had read and memorized passages from the Quran. I learned Islam for years, but God never spoke to me through its teachings. In contrast, when I read verses or heard messages from the Bible there was a different voice speaking a different message with a different authority.

I gathered the courage to go forward to the preacher to tell me more about Christ and the Bible. I asked him if a Muslim could also have access to the Bible and the heavenly Father. Could I too, know for sure about eternal life, forgiveness of sin, escape from hell, and becoming a child of God?

The preacher shared with me John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” This verse alone has the answer to all religions. God sent His Son to die in our behalf because of the sin of all mankind. It takes only believing this truth to escape eternal hell. God did that out of love and the goodness of His heart; but also because He is a righteous judge. The judgment of God requires a penalty for sin. “The wages of sin is death…” Romans 6:23a But God is also merciful; that is why he gives us the alternative: “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23b

The simple truth was too good to be true — but it is true, because it is God’s Word. I could not ignore God’s call to me — “Come, come, come.” “Today, if you hear His voice, harden not your heart.” Hebrews 3:7-8 And the more I read and heard the quotations from the Bible, the more I became convinced that God was speaking to me personally.

God’s Word continued addressing my heart. “How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation?” Hebrews 2:3 There is no escape from God’s eternal judgment on sinful man unless they come to acknowledge Who Jesus Christ is, and what He did for them. God gave a warning in case I hesitated to believe His Word: “Behold, now is the accepted time, behold now is the day of salvation.” II Corinthians 6:2 That simply means that tomorrow can be too late. To reject Christ as Savior of the whole world brings the judgment of God, who provided His Son to take our place on the cross of Calvary. Does it matter what all other religions teach? No. Why? Because God’s eternal truth does not change.

Finally, after years of agony I was led to the truth, the Lord — my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is God; He is the truth; He is the giver of life; He is the only way of salvation.

Dear Muslim friend, remember, you will stand some day before the throne of God, just by yourself. Would you be able to stand God’s judgment?

Christians — those who believe Christ as their Savior — are no longer under God’s judgment, because God already judged them in the Person of Christ. He died for them. Well, He died for you too.

Now, may I ask you, what would stop you from telling God right now that you are a sinner and that you want Christ to save you? Trust Him as your Savior right now. Then there would be joy in heaven for the salvation of your precious soul.

I searched for truth for years, until God reached out of heaven and sent His servant the preacher to lead me to Christ. God is doing that now. You too can know the truth and enjoy the same spiritual freedom I have. “…and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

Dear Muslim friend, come join us in the spiritual freedom we have in Christ our Lord, and let us hear from you so we can rejoice with you.

Sincerely,

Joseph Abraham
